Dr. Pitaras Board Certified in Critical Care

1/13/2011

MAYFIELD, KY – Dr. Elias Pitaras, Jackson Purchase Medical Center board certified nephrologist, recently received his board certification in critical care medicine and is the only nephrologist in the region to obtain this certification.

Nephrology focuses on the function and diseases of the kidney. A nephrologist is a physician who has been trained in the diagnosis and management of kidney disease, by regulating blood pressure, regulating electrolytes, balancing fluids in the body and administering dialysis. Nephrologists treat many different kidney disorders, including acid-base disorders, electrolyte disorders, kidney stones, hypertension (high blood pressure), acute kidney disease and end-stage renal disease.

“ We are very proud of Dr. Pitaras’ s accomplishment. He is an excellent Intensivist and director of our critical care unit, here at Jackson Purchase Medical Center. Dr. Pitaras is a dedicated, compassionate physician and is actively involved in each of our patient’ s care. Being board certified in CCU brings another aspect to the excellence of care patients receive here at Jackson Purchase Medical Center,” said Sandy Gregory, JPMC Critical Care Director.

A native of Greece, Dr. Pitaras graduated from University of Debrecen, Medical and Science Health Center in Hungary. He completed residency/fellowship in internal medicine, critical care and nephrology at Maimonides Medical Center and Brookdale University Hospital, both in Brooklyn, N.Y.

He and his wife, Dr. Anita Torok, a gastroenterologist, joined JPMC in September of 2008.

Dr. Pitaras thinks practicing medicine at JPMC has all the advantages of a metropolitan facility, but in a setting that affords he and his wife a much-sought quality of life. “ The hospital is state of art,” he said, and added that it is complemented with high-quality physicians and staff.
