Bariatrics Program

It has been estimated that over 64% of all U.S. adults are considered overweight and over 30% are diagnosed as obese. According to the Surgeon General, obesity has reached epidemic proportions nationwide.

In the wake of this growing national health problem, Jackson Purchase Medical Center has partnered with Dr. G. Derek Weiss, Dr. John S. Oldham and Dr. Peter M. Denk to create the Bariatrics at Jackson Purchase Medical Center surgical weight loss program which utilizes the Laparoscopic Adjustable Banding System (a minimally invasive technique for the treatment of obesity).

About the Program

Jackson Purchase Medical Center has put together a comprehensive bariatric surgery program, utilizing the Laparoscopic Adjustable Banding System, which is multidisciplinary in nature, consisting of case managers, nutritionists, physical therapists and more. Patients selected as potential candidates for Laparoscopic Adjustable Banding System surgery undergo a thorough medical evaluation and psychological and dietary screening prior to surgery.

The Laparoscopic Adjustable Banding System is placed laparoscopically without cutting or stapling of the stomach or rerouting the intestine to bypass normal digestion. The Laparoscopic Adjustable Banding System creates an earlier feeling of fullness and limits the portion of food consumed. Because this procedure is less invasive than traditional bypass surgery, it is considered safer and also more economical for patients. Laparoscopic Adjustable Banding System patients comment on how their health and quality of life has improved since undergoing the weight loss procedure.

About Surgical Weight Loss

Like any major surgery, there are underlying risks. However, the benefits are worth noting. Surgery and the associated weight loss can reduce the rate of obesity related diseases by 95% within the first year. Patients can lead a healthier lifestyle, lower their disease risk and stop taking drugs for related diseases such as diabetes.

Throughout this entire process, Drs. Weiss and Oldham use their training, skills and experience to perform your surgery ... and change your life.
