Endoscopic Ultrasound

Jackson Purchase Medical Center is proud to be the only hospital in the region performing endoscopic ultrasounds.

This non-invasive procedure is primarily used to detect pancreatic, esophageal and gastric cancer, as well as benign tumors of the upper gastro-intestinal tract.

From various positions between the esophagus and duodenum, organs within and outside the gastrointestinal tract can be imaged to see if they are abnormal and they can be biopsied. Organs such as the liver, pancreas and adrenal glands are easily biopsied as are any abnormal lymph nodes.

Additionally, the gastrointestinal wall can be imaged to see if it is abnormally thick suggesting inflammation or malignancy.

The technology is so new that only gastroenterologists who have just completed their training are qualified to perform the procedure. Dr. Anita Torok, JPMC's new gastroenterologist, is qualified to perform endoscopic ultrasounds.
